Gardeners Loxford is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise that professional gardening work can involve physical, chemical and environmental hazards, and we take all reasonably practicable steps to minimise risks and maintain safe working conditions.

Policy Objectives

The objectives of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent accidents and work related ill health, protect property and the environment, and promote a culture of safety awareness in all gardening activities. We aim to integrate health and safety considerations into planning, supervision and delivery of all services, from small domestic gardens to larger commercial grounds.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Gardeners Loxford has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes assessing significant risks associated with gardening tasks, providing adequate resources for safe working practices, and ensuring that health and safety requirements are communicated and understood. Managers will review working methods, equipment and training needs regularly and will update the policy as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice and operational requirements.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Gardeners must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear specified personal protective equipment, and report hazards, near misses, incidents or defective equipment to their supervisor without delay. Employees are expected to cooperate fully with health and safety procedures and to participate in training and refresher sessions as required.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before undertaking gardening work, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards, evaluate the level of risk and determine suitable control measures. Typical hazards in gardening can include manual handling, working with sharp tools and machinery, slips and trips, exposure to chemicals, noise and vibration, and adverse weather conditions. Control measures may include using the right tools for the job, planning access routes, setting up exclusion zones where necessary, and ensuring that all work areas are kept tidy and free from obstructions.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners Loxford will provide tools and machinery that are suitable for the intended gardening tasks and maintained in safe working order. Only trained and authorised staff may operate powered machinery, and they must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures at all times.

Guards, safety devices and emergency stop mechanisms must never be removed or bypassed. Fuel and oils will be stored, handled and disposed of safely, and engines will be switched off and allowed to cool before refuelling or maintenance.

Personal Protective Equipment

We are aware of potential biological hazards such as soil borne organisms, plant irritants, insects and allergens. Staff are instructed on hygiene measures such as hand washing, safe handling of organic waste and avoiding contact with eyes, mouth and open wounds during and after gardening tasks.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

When using vehicles to access client sites or to transport equipment and waste, drivers must follow all road safety rules and company procedures. Loading and unloading will be carried out in a safe area where possible, with care taken to protect pedestrians and property. On site, particular attention will be given to safe access routes, secure positioning of vehicles and trailers, and clear separation of work zones from public areas.

Weather, Environment and Public Safety

Outdoor gardening work is affected by weather conditions. Gardeners Loxford will consider heat, cold, wind, rain and lightning risks when planning work, and may postpone or modify tasks when conditions are unsafe. Staff will be advised on appropriate clothing, hydration and sun protection.

We will take care to protect members of the public during gardening operations by cordoning off work areas where necessary, using warning signs and maintaining awareness of passers by, neighbouring properties and pets. Tools and materials will not be left unattended in a way that could present a hazard.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Gardeners Loxford will provide suitable induction and ongoing training to ensure that employees have the knowledge and skills to work safely. Topics may include safe use of machinery, manual handling, chemical safety, first aid awareness, fire precautions and emergency procedures.
